Nestled in a quiet suburban neighborhood in Ellicott City, Maryland sits an unexpected gem: the Terra Maria Ruins. Built in 1831, the remains transports visitors to a bygone era. The Terra Maria ruins were once part of St. Charles College, a testament to the elegance and opulence of the past. After a tragic fire in 1911 that consumed most of the college, the remnants of its stone walls, archways, and crumbling staircases evoke a sense of whimsical nostalgia, making it an ideal setting for a fairytale-inspired engagement session. The ruins' tranquil surroundings and lush greenery add a touch of whimsy to the atmosphere, lending an ethereal moment to the photographs.
When first stepping into the Terra Maria Ruins, you instantly feel like you've stepped into a bygone era when romance and chivalry flourished. Belle and Nate, inspired by this timeless aesthetic, chose the location to capture their love story in a setting that resonated with their hearts. As they wandered through the ruins hand-in-hand, their love for each other became even more apparent, intertwining with the magic of the place.
Belle selected to wear a white Baltic Born lace dress that epitomized elegance and grace. Nate, on the other hand, opted for a classic ensemble, donning a polo shirt with khakis, exuding an understated charm. Their style choices complemented the castle-like atmosphere, transporting you into a world where love conquers all.
While posed photos have their time and place, during my sessions, I make sure to provide ques that keep couples in the moment- promoting more candid and authentic expressions. I love incorporating movement into sessions as it is the perfect way for the couple to focus their attention on each other rather than the camera. As I watched Belle & Nate twirl, walk, spin, and dance, I saw their love and affection unfold before me. Nate couldn't take his eyes off of Belle and in turn, Belle was all smiles and giggles.
During an engagement session, I always encourage couples to have multiple outfit changes. This can enhance the visual narrative and add variety to the photographs. By adding another outfit to your session, it offers a reflection of various moods, allowing couples to express themselves fully. Belle and Nate understood this concept and decided to incorporate two outfits into their session. This decision allowed them to showcase different facets of their personalities and love story, creating a more comprehensive and captivating photo collection.
Through photography, I seek to capture emotion, beauty, and a sense of timelessness. From the evident affection for each other, the intricate details of their attire, and the quiet and enchanting atmosphere of the ruins, Belle's and Nate's engagement session displayed all the above. The ruins' rich history and ethereal ambiance created the perfect backdrop for their engagement session and I look forward to continuing to witness their love story unfold at their September wedding.
