If you’re planning a portrait session and wondering what to wear, you’re in the right place. Outfit planning is one of the most common things clients ask about; and for good reason. The right clothing makes you feel confident, the right colors photograph beautifully, and the right textures keep your images timeless rather than trendy. Whether you’re looking at fall outfits, gathering inspiration for winter fashion, or simply want elevated fashion outfit ideas for your photo session, I’ve designed two tools to make it easy: the Wardrobe Tool and the Color Harmony Tool.

Why Outfit Planning Matters

Your final images reflect more than just your pose—they reflect your environment, your lighting, and how your clothes harmonize with everything around you. A well-coordinated palette ensures you look cohesive as a group (if family) or styled in a single-subject session. And with autumn coming and winter ahead, people are searching for terms like fall outfit ideaswinter fashion inspo, and portrait session outfit inspiration every week.

How to Use the Wardrobe Tool + Color Harmony Tool (with a Fall Example)

Here’s how you’ll use both tools together to map out the ideal outfit for a fall portrait session:

Step 1: Head to the Wardrobe ToolClick Here

  • Choose your session setting (for example: vineyard / field / countryside).
  • Choose your season (in this case: Fall).
  • The tool then shows curated boards and palettes tailored for that setting/season.
  • Look at the suggested palettes: you’ll see color swatches, tips like “rust, camel, navy,” and a link to a Pinterest board filled with actual outfit ideas.

Step 2: Pick your dominant color.
From the palette the tool shows, choose one main color you’ll wear. For example: a burgundy sweater dress. This becomes your base.

Step 3: Use the Color Harmony Tool.

  • Go to the Color Harmony Tool next.
  • Input that base color (burgundy) in the color picker.
  • Toggle to “Analogous” (which tends to feel very autumnal) or “Triadic” if you want some contrast.
  • The tool generates three additional complementary colors. For example: your base burgundy, then a muted olive, then warm taupe, then deep purple.

Step 4: Build your outfit.

  • Your dominant color = burgundy piece (your dress or main look).
  • Your supporting tones = olive or taupe (partner/spouse or children) so you’re coordinated without matching exactly.
  • Your accent color = rust (shoes, belt, layer) to add contrast.
  • For texture: think wool, suede boots, cable-knit layer. Use rich textures to elevate “fall outfit” into look that reads editorial rather than casual.

Step 5: Use the Pinterest board for inspiration.
Click the board from the Wardrobe Tool and browse the outfit combinations—see how others have layered, added hats, boots, scarves. Save what resonates. View the Pinterest Boards Here
