Karmin’s Dreamy Coastal Graduation Session | Atlantic Beach NC Senior Photographer

There is something especially meaningful about taking graduation photos in a place that already holds so much of your story. After graduating with her Master of Social Work, Karmin wanted her senior portraits to feel like home; and for someone who grew up on the Crystal Coast, there was no better place than Atlantic Beach, North Carolina.

We spent the evening celebrating this incredibly exciting season of her life with graduation portraits along the beach; her cap and gown, her puppy Iris, and one of those dreamy Crystal Coast sunsets that made the entire evening feel a little extra special.

Karmin grew up here on the Crystal Coast, so choosing Atlantic Beach for her graduation photos wasn’t simply about finding a beautiful backdrop. It was about documenting this accomplishment in a place that has been woven into so much of her life.

I love when the location of a portrait session carries meaning. Years from now, these photographs won’t only remind Karmin of earning her MSW, they’ll also hold a little piece of the place she knows and loves.

We incorporated her cap, gown, and graduation stole throughout the session while still leaving plenty of room for portraits that felt relaxed and natural. The result was a mix of traditional graduation photos and the more candid, movement-filled imagery that results in a gallery that feels like you.

Bringing a Little Piece of Life Along

And, of course, Iris had to make an appearance.

Karmin brought her puppy along for part of her senior session, and some of my favorite photographs from the evening ended up being the two of them together. There is something so sweet about including the pieces of your life that matter to you right now; whether that’s a pet, a family member, something connected to your degree, or simply a place you love.

Iris gave us plenty of those perfectly imperfect moments that could never be completely planned: puppy kisses, cuddles, and a few photographs that I have a feeling will become even more meaningful as the years go by.

Why Atlantic Beach Is Beautiful for Senior Pictures

Atlantic Beach is one of my favorite places on the Crystal Coast for senior and graduation photos because of how much variety we can create without losing that distinctly coastal feeling.

The dunes and sea oats create a softer, natural backdrop, while the open beach gives us room for movement and more editorial portraits. Then there is the shoreline itself; perfect for kicking off your shoes, walking through the water, and ending the session with photographs that feel a little less posed and a lot more like an evening at the beach.

For someone like Karmin who grew up along the Crystal Coast, those details made the location even more fitting.

For beach senior pictures in Atlantic Beach, I typically recommend scheduling your session toward sunset.

As the sun gets lower, the light becomes softer and warmer, the temperature begins to cool, and the beach often starts to quiet down from the busier part of the day. It also gives us the opportunity to photograph through several different types of light as the evening changes.

Making Your Senior Portraits Feel Like You

Senior and graduation portraits don’t have to feel overly posed or traditional.

This season represents such a specific point in your life: whether you’re graduating from high school, college, graduate school, or celebrating another milestone, your photographs should reflect more than the cap and gown.

Bring the puppy.

Choose the beach you grew up visiting.

Walk into the ocean at the end.

Wear the graduation regalia you’ve worked so hard to earn, but bring an outfit that simply feels like you, too.

The best senior portraits are the ones that celebrate the accomplishment while still documenting the person behind it.
